Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Scholarship Statement of Purpose (SOP) Samples, Format, and Writing Instructions

Statement of Purpose is abbreviated as SOP which is known as an academic document sharing insights on candidate’s intention, objective, and plan of execution towards a project or study in question.

Isn’t it wonderful to be at that stage of life where you can finally apply to the university of your dreams? And how better to start this journey of yours than by getting a scholarship to fund the expenses?

Dreaded by the fact that you will be competing against thousands of other applicants, many of those who may even have better academic credentials than you?

Well, let me tell you that having remarkable academic qualifications isn’t the only way you can win that scholarship. There are various other governing factors, such as the return that you can give to the scholarship awarding authorities for their investment. But you can’t just book an appointment with them o describe your intentions, can you? This is where the documents for scholarship applications come in.

One such document that can help you show your worth for the scholarship is an SOP.

What is an SOP For Scholarships?

After preparing for the scholarship application, I know the first thing that came to your mind after going through the term SOP is:

An SOP or a Statement of Purpose for scholarships is a formal document that accompanies your scholarship application which helps the scholarship committee in breeding familiarity with you, as a worthy candidate.

Contents of a Statement of Purpose (SOP) for Scholarships

A Statement of Purpose (SOP) for scholarships consists of such details’ as the university you are applying to, in which degree program, your incentive for being affiliated with the particular field, the knowledge you possess for the particular field of specialization, and your future goals.

Importance of a Statement of Purpose (SOP) for scholarships

Like all the other scholarship application documents that are requested, the Statement of Purpose (SOP) for scholarships also has the same function; to portray you as a deserving candidate for a particular scholarship award.

A Statement of Purpose (SOP) for scholarships acts as the difference between a scholarship application being approved or rejected.

All those savvy applicants who are determined to make it through the application procedures to their degree seats know how to do justice to their SOPs for Scholarships. If you too want to earn a ticket from the application reviewing stage to being invited for an interview, read this article to the last and draft such an SOP that will be anything but rejected.

Format of a Compelling Statement of Purpose (SOP) for Scholarships

If you want the reviewer to go through your document till the last, it is essential that you create it in a comprehensible manner.

Stated below is the standard format for a Statement of Purpose (SOP) for scholarships:

  1. An appealing intro
  2. The main body
  3. An impactful ending.

#1 The Introductory Paragraph:-

Consider your Scholarships Statement of Purpose as an autobiography about yourself, only, apart from depicting your life from the very beginning, assume that it starts from the day you started dreaming about the degree program that you are applying to.

How will you start it, then? Let me give you an example. How about stating a random fact about your desired degree?

It can go like, ‘if one really feels the urge to appreciate how living systems operate, survive and die, studying Biochemistry is the only way to go….’

Catchy, isn’t it?

#2 The Main Body:-

After the opening paragraph, you can start off with the main body of your Statement of Purpose for scholarships.

Now, if you are following the modern format, you will be dividing the body into several small paragraphs, each one describing a different aspect.

  • The first paragraph: in this paragraph, start off by describing a bit about yourself. How you found the particular degree program interesting; an interesting story, if you may.
  • The second paragraph: in the subsequent paragraph, state your academic qualifications. Your distinctions and any laureates that you have achieved are also to be mentioned in this paragraph.
  • The third paragraph: in the third body paragraph, display your understanding of the field. Tell them a little something about a branch of the field, say, the biology of cancer, and how you find it fascinating.
  • The fourth body paragraph: lastly, state your long-term goals. Pictures where you see yourself in 5 years’ time and how you intend to make use of your degree.

#3 The ending:-

Give your Statement of Purpose an impactful ending. Give your regards to the scholarship committee for initiating such an opportunity and for giving you a chance to earn yourself a funding source for your degree.

Tips for Drafting a Winning Statement of Purpose for Scholarships

Want some insider tips to make your Statement of Purpose for scholarships stand out from that of other applicants’? You ask it, we have it!

Take a look at these top tips and guarantee yourself a place on the list of scholarship winners.

  • Support your information with facts

If you are describing the benefits of the field of study you are applying to, support it with logical reasoning. The reviewers need to know that all the information is authentic and not made up by themselves.

  • Do not overcomplicate your SOP

One thing that many candidates disregard is using extremely difficult vocabulary. One tip that will help you in overcoming this mistake is to assume that you are writing your SOP for a seventh-grader.

  • Create a rough draft first

Start your SOP off with a rough draft so that by the end, you know that the finalized version is error-free and thoughtful.

  • Consider the length

A standard SOP is almost 800 to 1000 words in length; longer than that and it will look more of a thesis than an SOP.

  • Recheck

I always stress rechecking documents before submitting them, and an SOP is no exception.
