The government of New Zealand offers the following types of scholarships to eligible students of developing countries so that they can study abroad in a world-class international university:

  • New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships for Pacific and Timor Leste citizens
  • New Zealand English Language Training for Officials Scholarship Program
  • New Zealand International Scholarship program
  • New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships for citizens of ASEAN and Timor Leste

#1 New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships for Pacific and Timor Leste citizens:-

The New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarship program funds eligible overseas students from the Pacific countries and Timor Leste to learn new skills and get professional work experience under a New Zealand certified training professional so that they can utilize these skills for improvement in their own countries.

Students can also avail the New Zealand Shot Term Training Scholarships online.

Time Duration:- The duration of this program ranges from one week to 12 months.

Coverage and benefits of the New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships Program:-

The respective program covers the following overheads of the scholars:

  • Full tuition fee
  • Full waive on training-related costs
  • A weekly allowance to cover basic living expenses.

#2 New Zealand English Language Training for Officials Scholarship Program:-

The New Zealand government offers the New Zealand English Language Training for Officials Scholarships for citizens of Asia and Africa. The aim of this scholarship program is to help Asian and African scholars to improve their English and to create links with New Zealand nationals and other scholarship holders.

  • The New Zealand government offers its English Language Training for Officials Scholarships- Asia (NZELTO- Asia) by offering three courses per year. 

Time duration:- This course extends for up to 5 months.

  • The admissions for the New Zealand English Language Training for Officials for African citizens open twice a year.

Time duration:- This course extends for up to 10 weeks.

The respective scholarship program covers the following overheads of the scholars:

  • Fully funded English Language course fee
  • A weekly allowance to cover basic living expenses.

#3 New Zealand International Scholarship program:-

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade initiates the New Zealand International Scholarship program each year for funding the higher education of students from different parts of the world, including Pacific countries, Commonwealth countries, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Coverage and benefits of the New Zealand International Scholarship Program:

The respective program covers the following overheads of the scholars:

  • Fully funded tuition fee
  • A weekly living allowance worth NZ$ 491 
  • Establishment allowance of NZ$3,000 (for accommodation expenses, textbook costs & other study materials)
  • Medical insurance
  • Travel insurance
  • Return tickets
  • One or two visits to the home country during the degree program.

#4 New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarships for citizens of ASEAN and Timor Leste:-

The New Zealand government invites eligible students from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries and Timor Leste to take on a fully-funded short-term professional training course in New Zealand.

Time Duration:- The program ranges from 2 weeks to 4 weeks.

Coverage and benefits of the New Zealand Short Term Training Scholarship Program for ASEAN and Timor Leste citizens:

The respective program covers the following overheads of the scholars:

  • Fully funded tuition fee
  • Subsidies for training expenses
  • A weekly allowance to cover basic living expenditures.

List of New Zealand Scholarships offered by universities:-

Apart from the New Zealand Government Scholarships, there are some other scholarship programs launched by the country’s universities for eligible students of developing countries so that they can study abroad in a world-class international university. Some of them are as follows:

  • International First-Year Scholarships by the University of Canterbury 
  • International Research Master’s Award by the University of Otago
  • International Scholarships by Victoria University
  • International Excellence Award by the University of Waikato.

#5 International First Year Scholarships:-

Host university: University of Canterbury.

The University of Canterbury offers a diverse range of scholarships to overseas students upon various governing factors like academic achievements or sporting achievements. This scholarship is awarded to meritorious undergraduate students who are able to fund their future studies.

Time duration:- The award of this scholarship expires in one year.

Coverage and benefits of the International First Year Scholarship program:-

The respective program covers the following overheads of the scholars:

  • Financial assistance worth $15,000
  • The direct transfer of funds to the university’s accounts department.

#6 International Research Master’s Award:-

Host university: University of Otago.

The University of Otago, in addition to funding the educational expenses of international students pursuing their Master’s degrees in New Zealand, also funds some doctorate degrees on the academic merit of students.

Coverage and benefits of the International Research Master’s Award:-

The respective program covers the following overheads of the scholars:

  • Full tuition fee waiver
  • Stipend worth NZ$ 15,000 per year.

#7 International Scholarships by Victoria University:-

Host university: Victoria University.

This scholarship program hosted by Victoria University thrives to encourage research at post-graduate levels. It thus funds bright students from around the world to pursue research-oriented Master’s degree programs.

Coverage and benefits of the International Scholarships by Victoria University:-

The respective program covers the following overheads of the scholars:

  • Fully funded Master’s degree.

#8 International Excellence Award:-

Host university: University of Waikato.

This scholarship program by the University of Waikato not only funds the educational expenses of international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels but also gives them an opportunity to represent the University as its global ambassadors.

Coverage and benefits of the International Excellence Awards:-

The respective program covers the following overheads of the scholars:

  • Full tuition fee waiver
  • Subsidized housing.
